free easy knitting pattern • • •Abalone Silk Bagapprox 8" square, 32" cord strapThis exotic bag is easy to knit in the round. A big abalone button compliments the silk colors beautifully. Materials approx. 110 yds recycled silk yarn US#9 circular 16" needles 1.5" abalone button stitch marker Gauge: 3.5 sts = 1 inch Directions Very loosely cast on 60 sts. Place marker on needle and join, being careful not to twist stitches. Rnd 1: Knit. Rnd 2: Purl. Rows 3-6: Repeat rows 1-2. Now knit every round until bag measures 8" long, ending at marker. Cast off and sew bottom seam to close bottom of bag. (Or turn bag inside out and close with 3-needle bind off, if you prefer.) Knit or Crochet Strap Cast on 120 stitches, then immediately bind them off. Or work 2 stitches in I-cord until 32 inches long. Sew strap to bag. Add Button and Loop Sew 1.5" abalone button to front of bag. Make a loop just long enough to fit around your button: Knit a short 2-stitch I-cord or crochet a little chain. Sew loop securely to top of bag. How to knit I-cord:With double-pointed or circular needles, cast on 2 or 3 sts and knit them. Don't turn at the end of the row; instead slide the stitches back to the other end of the needle and knit them again. (The yarn will be at the wrong end of the row, but nevermind. Just *bring the yarn around the back of the stitches and knit them again, and then slide the stitches back to the other end of the needle.) Repeat from * until cord reaches the desired length.Jill Vosburg © 2006-2008 All rights reserved www.justonemorerow.com This pattern may be printed for personal use providing this entire copyright notice is included.
